Ellie Arroway (played by Jodie Foster) has been fascinated by radio communication since childhood. As an adult, she becomes an astronomer, working on a project to receive signals from outer space. She hopes to find evidence of other civilizations in the universe. However, her genius ideal is met with skepticism from investors, and fortunately, a mysterious person helps Ellie continue her work. One day, Ellie receives a frequency signal from the star Vega, seemingly proving that her work has been correct all along. However, this brings not personal success, but conflicts and discussions from political, social, religious, and national perspectives. Deep in the eye of this storm, Ellie must also face her complicated relationship with Palmer Joss (played by Matthew McConaughey), a religious figure. Ellie is confronted with challenges that far exceed the academic realm, navigating personal and global truths and realities.
