Directed by the renowned filmmaker Yan Jun, this cautionary tale is adapted from Pu Songling's classic story "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio". It depicts the story of Lian Su (Li Jing), a talented woman during the late Ming Dynasty, who accidentally kills a villain while trying to save her father, and subsequently commits suicide by jumping into a well. More than a decade later, the scholar Yang Yuwei (Li Lihua) seeks refuge from the pursuit of a treacherous official by turning to his father's old friend, Tang Shangshu (Jing Miao). However, Tang Shangshu, eager to curry favor, refuses to take him in. Fortunately, the loyal servant Li Gui (Gu Wenzong) helps Yuwei hide in an abandoned study. One night, Yuwei unwittingly meets Lian Su, and a romantic bond develops between a human and a ghost. Tang Shangshu's adopted daughter Lian Wei (also played by Li Jing) is Lian Su's biological sister and is already betrothed to Yuwei. Out of jealousy, Lian Wei, who is envious of her deceased sister, commands the servants to burn down the study, but accidentally falls to her death. Lian Su is able to borrow her sister's corpse to return to life, ultimately uniting with Yuwei. This film features the legendary star Li Lihua in the role of the male lead, while the "Asian Film Queen" Li Jing performs brilliantly in the roles of both Lian Su and Lian Wei, showcasing a virtuous and a malevolent character, as well as a human and a ghost.
