Washington officer Alex Cross (played by Morgan Freeman) is a psychological consultant for the police. He suddenly receives news of his niece who is missing while studying in the small town of Durham, North Carolina. To find his niece, Alex decides to investigate. However, upon arriving at the local police station, Alex discovers that several young girls have been missing, and his niece is just one of the victims; all of them are intelligent and beautiful girls. The only girl who has managed to escape is Dr. Kate McTiernan (played by Ashley Judd), who barely survived and remembers that the perpetrator is a masked psychopath who calls himself "Casanova."
