The story takes place in the early Republic of China, where Wang Ziqian (played by Qin Hailu), Wang Ziyin (played by Liu Tao), and Wang Ziying (played by Tu Liman) are the three daughters of the grand scholar Wang Wenqian. When the Wang family faces disaster, Wang Wenqian entrusts the three girls to the butler and gives each of them a piece of a jade pendant as a token for recognition.
