In Japan during the Edo period, a game called "Hyakumonogatari" became popular: a group of people would light a hundred oil lamps, and then each person would take turns telling ghost stories; after finishing each story, they would extinguish one lamp. It is said that when the last lamp goes out, true spirits will be summoned. "Kaidan Hyakumonogatari" tells eleven well-known mysterious stories in the form of one ghost story per episode.
