Penny (Susan Strasberg) grew up with her mother after her parents divorced when she was very young. An accident took her mother's life, leaving Penny all alone. She accepted her father's invitation to live with him and her stepmother. However, when she arrived at her father's house, she found only her stepmother there. Although the woman was very kind and warm, Penny was filled with suspicion. Various strange occurrences in her stepmother's house and the inexplicably missing father increasingly strained Penny's nerves, and gradually, she began to lose track of whether everything she experienced there was just her own delusion. Clearly, her stepmother also hoped to instill this self-doubt in Penny.
