Peter (Charles Coburn) is a university professor. One day, at his father's request, he goes to a nightclub to find his rakish cousin Keith (James Ellison), but unexpectedly encounters the nightclub singer Francie (Ginger Rogers). The two fall in love at first sight, and after a night of passion, they become husband and wife. After the excitement fades, Peter begins to worry about his impulsive act; his father is a very stubborn man who would never accept Francie's status as a singer. Moreover, his father has already found a suitable girl, Helen (Frances Mercer), to be his future wife. Peter repeatedly tries to confess his relationship with Francie to his father but fails each time, worsening the relationship between his father and Francie.
