Model prisoner Frank Leone (played by Sylvester Stallone) has six months left on his sentence and is allowed regular outings to meet his girlfriend. The former mechanic has his sights set on a warehouse to turn into a future repair shop, and an ordinary life awaits him. However, one day he is suddenly transferred to the harsh environment of Gateway Prison, all because five years ago he escaped the grasp of warden Sam Warden (played by Donald Sutherland) to see his mentor and foster father one last time. Frank's successful escape made him a hero, while Warden harbors resentment after being punished. Now, Warden has Frank back in his control and seeks revenge. Frank faces brutal treatment from Warden and his subordinates but remains resilient and gradually makes friends in prison, including a cellmate who is always plotting escapes, a frail young "hitman," and the head of the prison repair shop. His monotonous life begins to improve, but Warden continues to watch him silently, preparing to inflict more pain...
