The story takes place in France in 1563, during a prolonged and intense war between Protestants and Catholics. Henry (Julien Boisselier) as the Protestant leader must resist the powerful Queen Mother Catherine (Sandra Hüller). To quell the war, the royal family decides to sacrifice Princess Margaret (Armelle Deutsch), betrothing her to Henry. However, this is all a conspiracy masterminded by Catherine. On the very night of Henry and Margaret's wedding, Catherine sounds the alarm, commanding her troops to carry out a brutal massacre against the Protestants in the country. Fortunately, Henry escapes the slaughter and, through effort and luck, becomes the ultimate victor, founding the Bourbon dynasty and leaving his name in history.
