With the death of the old pope, the college of cardinals gathers in the Vatican to prepare to elect a new pope. Devout believers and journalists from around the world gather in St. Peter's Square, eagerly waiting for the white smoke to emerge from the chimney. However, inside the Vatican, the election is not going smoothly. The hopeful candidates among the cardinals are shifting blame onto one another, and after several rounds of struggle, Cardinal Melville (played by Michel Piccoli) is chosen. However, Melville is completely unprepared to become pope; not only does he flee during his first public balcony speech, but he even runs away, disappearing into the streets of Rome. The Vatican is simultaneously trying to calm the public while searching desperately for the runaway pope! What unusual situations will arise in the Vatican during the days without a pope? And what insights will Melville gain during his days away from home?
