One room, two uncles, a deep debate with chirping sounds, a theatrical-style TV movie, and a brief yet profound struggle with life and death themes. Without the script of "No Country for Old Men" attached, and without seeing the scenes featuring Hollywood's most famous cowboys and gunmen, Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson, it's hard to know how many people would be interested in "Sunset Limited." However, it is HBO's major TV film this year and is expected to become a hot contender at next year's Golden Globes and Emmys. The "Sunset Limited" is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning American author and playwright Cormac McCarthy’s novel and play of the same name. The story is filled with dark humor and poignant sadness, giving it a stage play feel. It revolves around two ordinary nameless individuals, referred to only by the codenames "Black" and "White." They are drastically different strangers: a Black religious zealot and a godless White professor. Before the plot unfolds, the Black man saves the White man from suicide at the Sunset Limited train station. All subsequent content takes place in an ordinary apartment in New York, where the two engage in a discussion and clash about religion, life, death, and whether the White man should commit suicide. They argue fiercely from their differing viewpoints about whether there are sufficient reasons to believe in God, and what the difference is between a true believer and a sinner seeking redemption. 【Behind the Scenes】 This HBO TV movie is directed by Tommy Lee Jones with a script written by Cormac McCarthy. This isn't the first collaboration for the two; their last was in the Coen brothers' classic "No Country for Old Men." Adapting Cormac McCarthy's works for the screen is something that many filmmakers shy away from, but Tommy Lee Jones, having starred in the 2007 film "No Country for Old Men" (based on McCarthy’s novel), is well-versed in the process. Thus, when he decided to adapt McCarthy’s suicide-themed script "The Sunset Limited," he called McCarthy to obtain permission. The reclusive author offered his blessing, and even visited the set. The film produced by HBO (premiered on February 12, 2011) features Samuel Jackson as Jones's co-star, with Jones saying, "Cormac spent a lot of rehearsal time with us, which was a great experience for Sam and me, but not for others, because I didn’t let anyone else interfere. Well, I did invite some people from HBO, but they could only stand against the wall and sit idly."
