Nearly seventy-year-old Old Tian (Zhou Guangda) lost his wife early on and has been waiting day and night at the Dashihe ferry to transport the passing villagers. Starting from his grandfather's generation, they have persisted for a full 120 years. Originally, their family fled here during a famine, and the kind Tujia mountain people welcomed them. Due to a raging river blocking the connection between the two banks, villagers had to take a long detour to get out of the mountains, making life extremely inconvenient. To repay this kindness, they used their ancestral skill—ferrying by boat—to provide free transportation for villagers going in and out of the mountains. The simple villagers occasionally dropped a handful of green vegetables or a few potatoes as a token of gratitude. Now, Old Tian is aging and plagued by illness, often feeling unable to cope. One day, his son, who works in Guangzhou (Liu Jun), returns, raising the question of how much longer this service, which has lasted 120 years, can continue… This film is adapted from the true story of the Wan Qizhen family's 120-year "Centennial Charity Ferry" in Enshi Prefecture, Hubei. In September 2013, it won the Special Award at the 37th Montreal International Film Festival and has been collected by the National Gallery of France.
