Trez (played by Alida Valli) is the owner of a café. Her husband went missing sixteen years ago during World War II after being evicted by German soldiers. Although everyone believes that he must be dead, Trez firmly believes that her husband is still alive somewhere in the world and is waiting for her. One day, a ragged homeless man walks past Trez's café, and her intuition tells her that this man is her long-lost husband. Trez follows the homeless man to his run-down shack, where she notices a scar on the back of his head, reinforcing her belief that he is the man she has waited for all these years. Trez tries various methods to awaken the homeless man's memory of her, but all efforts end in failure.
