Tom (Michael Fassbender) is a former soldier who used to serve on the front lines. Now, he and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) move to a small island off the west coast of Australia, where he becomes the lighthouse keeper. The isolated life on the island strengthens the bond between Tom and Isabel as they joyfully await the arrival of their child. Unexpectedly, a tragedy occurs when Isabel suffers a miscarriage, plunging her into despair over the loss of their child. One day, a boat washes ashore, and alongside a male corpse, there is a baby. Overjoyed, Isabel pleads with Tom to let her adopt and raise the child. Although this goes against Tom's principles, he ultimately agrees.
