In the late Edo period, in the Kansei domain, the low-ranking samurai Seibei (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) takes care of his demented elderly mother and two young daughters on a meager salary after his wife passes away. Because he rushes home every day after work and never participates in social gatherings, he is nicknamed “Twilight Seibei” by his colleagues. After his childhood friend Tomoe (played by Rie Miyazawa) divorces her husband and returns to her parents' house, she often visits Seibei's home to help take care of his mother and daughters, attracting much gossip. Seibei showcases his exceptional sword skills by repelling the unreasonable advances of Tomoe's ex-husband. However, when Tomoe's brother suggests that Seibei marry her, he kindly declines to spare her from suffering, causing Tomoe to disappear from his life. Once the lord of the domain learns of Seibei’s talents, he forces him to execute a rebel samurai who is resisting several opponents. Before he leaves, Seibei confesses his long-hidden love for Tomoe, only to find that she has already agreed to another marriage. With a heavy heart, Seibei steps onto a path of uncertain life and death.
