"Rent," the rock musical, became the seventh-longest-running show in Broadway history on March 1, 2006, while also receiving acclaim from the Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. This musical is adapted from Puccini's opera "La Bohème," focusing on a group of impoverished artists and musicians struggling to survive in New York's Alphabet City, even under the shadow of AIDS (which is tuberculosis in "La Bohème"). The original cast recording of this musical is one of the most successful recordings in American musical theater over the past thirty years, featuring a double-disc complete edition that includes a remix of "Seasons of Love" sung by Stevie Wonder, as well as a single-disc highlights album. "Rent" was the first Broadway musical to bring themes of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender issues to the stage, with previous productions touching on these topics categorized as Off-Broadway (with the exception of "Avenue Q"). This film is a live recording of the final performance of "Rent" on Broadway, which took place on September 7, 2008.
